Kommunity FK

Kommunity FK is a foundational pillar of the Los Angeles deathrock and post-punk scenes, formed in 1978 by visionary Patrick Mata. Unlike many of their contemporaries who focused on horror-punk tropes, Mata drew heavily from the European avant-garde, citing Throbbing Gristle, David Bowie's Berlin era, and Dadaism as primary influences.

This intellectual pedigree resulted in a sound that was more abstract and sonically adventurous than standard gothic rock. Their 1983 debut, 'The Vision and the Voice', and the 1985 follow-up, 'Close One Sad Eye', are considered essential texts of the genre. The band's history is marked by hiatuses and Mata's work with Sativa Luvbox, but their influence remained constant, bridging the gap between the raw energy of punk and the emerging industrial and darkwave movements. Critical consensus views them as the 'art-school' alternative to Christian Death, prioritizing texture and experimental composition over overt melodrama. They remain a cult favorite among crate diggers and fans of the 4AD and Batcave eras.
