Kokolo

High-velocity Afrobeat with a punk rock heart. Aggressive horns and relentless polyrhythms built for sweat-soaked dance floors and social defiance.

Intro

Kokolo sounds like a collision between the rhythmic complexity of Fela Kuti and the raw, confrontational energy of New York hardcore. It is Afrobeat stripped of its polite jazz sensibilities and injected with a shot of adrenaline. The music is defined by sharp, staccato horn stabs, interlocking guitar scratches, and a percussion section that feels like a runaway train. It is loud, proud, and physically demanding.

What sets them apart is the 'spiky' nature of their arrangements. While many Afrobeat revivalists lean into long, hypnotic jams, Kokolo favors a more emphatic, high-tempo approach that mirrors the DIY grit of their Lower East Side roots. Their songs often feature catchy, shout-along choruses designed to bridge the gap between the stage and the audience, turning every performance into a communal riot of sound.

Start with 'Fuss and Fight' to hear the band at their most foundational and fierce. It captures the early 2000s NYC scene perfectly, blending political urgency with a groove that refuses to let you stand still. If you want to hear their more expansive, global side, dive into '100 Fevers' or 'En Español' for a taste of how they integrate Latin and soul influences into their signature fire.

Kokolo ( kə-KOH-loh), also known as the Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra, is an American Afrobeat band from the Lower East Side of New York City, formed in 2001 by songwriter/producer Ray Lugo. Along with the Daktaris and Antibalas, they form part of the early New York Afrobeat scene that ignited the genre's current global revival.
