Klingonz

Formed in 1988 in Dublin before migrating to London, Klingonz became a cornerstone of the second wave of psychobilly. They distinguished themselves through a unique 'alien' gimmick and a more irreverent, humorous approach compared to the darker, more serious horror-themed bands of the era.

Their sound identity is built on the foundation of 'slap bass' technique, where the double bass is played with a percussive snapping of the strings against the fretboard, creating a rhythmic drive that bridges the gap between rockabilly and punk. Throughout the 1990s, they were prolific, releasing a string of albums like 'Flange' and 'Jobot' that solidified their reputation as the 'clowns of psychobilly.' Despite numerous lineup changes - including members moving to and from peers like Phantom Rockers and Frantic Flintstones - the band has maintained a consistent cult following. Critically, they are viewed as essential innovators who injected a sense of fun and surrealism into a genre that can sometimes become formulaic.
