Psychedelic breakbeats and Finnish forest trance. A liquid, high-energy blend of organic textures and squelchy analog synths for deep late-night immersion.
Kiwa sounds like the intersection of a high-tech laboratory and a deep, mossy Finnish forest. Their music carries the frantic, rhythmic complexity of breakbeat but wraps it in the shimmering, liquid textures of psychedelic trance. It is music that feels constantly in motion, shifting between heavy, syncopated grooves and expansive, atmospheric soundscapes that evoke ancient landscapes filtered through modern hardware.
What makes them truly distinctive is the 'Suomisaundi' influence, a specifically Finnish brand of psytrance that embraces humor, organic weirdness, and a refusal to stick to a 4/4 kick drum. Kiwa stands out by integrating funk and drum & bass sensibilities into this psychedelic framework, creating tracks that are as much about the physical groove as they are about the mental trip. The production is dense and tactile, filled with squelchy acid lines and unexpected rhythmic pivots.
Start with 'Dreamtime Enhancer' to hear the foundational blend of breaks and trance that defined their early underground reputation. For a more polished, club-ready experience, 'On The Frequency' showcases their evolution into progressive structures while maintaining that essential, slightly off-kilter Finnish character.
KIWA aka Markku Louhio (Mark Nomen), is an electronic music producer and musician from Finland. Originally a duo, KIWA also included Matti Elsinen (DJ Mauzer) as a member until 2016. Since then Markku has continued the project as a solo artist. Markku and Matti began their musical careers as producers in the psychedelic trance scene in 1995. The group started to make a name for themselves performing in underground raves and forest parties in the late 1990s. After their first releases on the Helsinki-based label Surreal Audio Recordings in 2000 and 2001, KIWA started to gain followers also internationally. The music of KIWA has influences among other styles from funk, breaks, house and drum & bass. [1] Archived 2012-03-25 at the Wayback Machine KIWA's first two albums, Dreamtime Enhancer (2002) [2] and Retroactive (2004) [3], represent a style blending mix of psy trance, breaks, electronica and occasional references to drum & bass. Kiwa's third album On the Frequency (2007) [4] shows a more progressive approach on dance music. Since 2009 KIWA has produced music for various musical genres and labels outside the psy trance scene, including glitch hop, breaks and hip hop. [5]. Markku Louhio is also known for his other projects Headphonics, Highpersonic Whomen, Omen Sisters and The Faithealers.
