Gritty garage rock with a sugary power-pop center. It sounds like a 1970s glam record left out in the sun, perfect for high-energy road trips and basement parties.
King Tuff sounds like the coolest kid in the 1974 detention hall who somehow traveled to the 21st century with a bag of fuzzy guitar pedals. It is a vibrant collision of garage rock grit and bubblegum pop melody, characterized by Kyle Thomas's distinctively nasal, sneering, yet strangely sweet vocal delivery. The music feels sun-baked and slightly dusty, like a long-lost cassette tape found in the glove box of a vintage van.
What makes the project distinctive is its ability to bridge the gap between heavy stoner rock riffs and shimmering psychedelic pop. While his peers in the California garage scene often lean into nihilism or pure noise, King Tuff embraces a sense of wonder and celebratory hedonism. There is a craftsmanship to the hooks that recalls the best of Marc Bolan or Big Star, but it is always delivered with a lo-fi, DIY edge that keeps it grounded in the underground.
Start with his 2012 self-titled album for the definitive introduction to his high-energy garage-pop sound. If you want something a bit heavier and more occult-themed, move to 'Black Moon Spell'. For a more mature, pastoral, and psychedelic experience, his 2023 release 'Smalltown Stardust' shows a softer, more reflective side of his songwriting.
Kyle Thomas, known professionally as King Tuff, is an American musician recording on Sub Pop Records. King Tuff and his band have released several music videos and have continually toured across the United States, Australia and Europe since 2012. He is also the lead guitarist and singer of stoner rock band Witch, and was a member of garage rock musician Ty Segall's backing band, the Muggers, formed following the release of Segall's studio album, Emotional Mugger.
