Intro

King Stingray creates a sound that is simultaneously brand new and deeply ancient. It is the sound of the Australian coastline, blending the jangly, upbeat energy of classic surf rock with the profound cultural depth of Yolŋu Matha lyrics and traditional melodies. The music feels like an invitation to a massive, inclusive celebration where the past and future are dancing together on the sand.

What truly sets them apart is the seamless integration of traditional elements like the yidaki (didgeridoo) and bilma (clapsticks) into a modern indie-rock framework. This isn't just 'fusion' music; it is a living, breathing evolution of a musical lineage that stretches back generations. The vocal harmonies are rich and communal, often shifting between English and Indigenous language with a natural flow that makes the listener feel the emotion even if they don't know every word.

Start with 'Hey Wanhaka' or 'Milkumana' to experience their signature blend of catchy hooks and cultural pride. These tracks serve as the perfect gateway into their self-titled debut, offering a high-octane introduction to what they call 'Yolŋu surf rock' - a genre that is as much about the spirit of the land as it is about the distortion on the guitars.

King Stingray is an Australian rock band from Northeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. With a sound self-described as "Yolŋu surf rock", the band perform songs with lyrics in both English and Yolŋu Matha. As of December 2025, the band consists of co-founding guitarist Roy Kellaway, vocalist and guitarist Dimathaya Burarrwanga, bassist Campbell Messer, drummer Lewis Stiles, and vocalist Ngalakan "Billy" Wanambi. King Stingray released their debut single, "Hey Wanhaka", in October 2020, and their self-titled debut album on 5 August 2022. Its follow-up, For the Dreams, was released on 8 November 2024.
