Blistering speed meets brutal honesty. High-velocity Midwest rap that functions as a deep-dive into mental health, resilience, and survival. Intense and technical.
King Iso creates music that feels like a high-speed chase through the corridors of a psychiatric ward. It is incredibly dense, characterized by the 'chopper' style of rap where syllables are delivered with the precision and speed of a machine gun. The production often leans into dark, cinematic territory, using minor-key piano melodies and aggressive, industrial-leaning drums that demand your full attention.
What truly sets him apart is the unflinching transparency of his lyrics. While many rappers use speed as a gimmick, Iso uses it to mirror the racing thoughts of anxiety and mania. He speaks with clinical accuracy about medication, isolation, and trauma, turning his personal history of homelessness and institutionalization into a roadmap for others. It is music that is simultaneously terrifyingly intense and deeply comforting for those who see themselves in his struggle.
Start with the album Get Well Soon. It represents the pinnacle of his technical ability while offering a cohesive narrative about healing and self-advocacy. From there, explore World War Me to hear how he transitioned his underground grit into a more polished, yet no less aggressive, major-label sound.
Terrell Gulledge (born September 10, 1989), better known by his stage name King Iso (fka ISO and Reali-T), is an American rapper from Omaha, Nebraska. He is currently signed to Tech N9ne's label Strange Music and is known for his collaborations with Tech N9ne, such as on the song "Face Off". Before his career in music, Gulledge struggled with homelessness and was put in prison multiple times as well as a mental institution. His stage name "Iso" stands for "I shall overcome" and was inspired by the name of the solitary confinement chamber he was placed in while admitted in the institution. These struggles inspired much of the content in his songs, which heavily focus on mental health. Iso was formerly signed to Twisted Insane's label Brainsick Muzik, before moving to Strange Music. In 2020, he released his first album under Strange Music, World War Me. His 2022 album Get Well Soon was met with positive reception from critics. In October 2023, he released the album iLLdren, containing features from Tech N9ne and X-Raided among others. The single "Way You Are" off the album discusses autism, which was inspired by Gulledge's son.
