Kiasmos

Kiasmos is the collaborative project of Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and Faroese producer Janus Rasmussen. Formed in 2009, the duo represents a bridge between the Erased Tapes 'modern classical' aesthetic and the minimal techno scene.

Arnalds brings his expertise in chamber music and BAFTA-winning scoring, while Rasmussen provides the rhythmic backbone and electronic sound design expertise. Their sound identity is defined by the use of acoustic instruments (piano, violin, cello) processed through electronic filters and set against a steady 4/4 pulse. This 'organic techno' approach has placed them at the center of a movement that includes artists like Christian Löffler and Rival Consoles. Critically, they are praised for their restraint and the 'glacial' quality of their production, which avoids the tropes of EDM in favor of texture and atmosphere. Their 2014 debut is considered a landmark in the crossover between indie-classical and electronic music, maintaining a steady presence in both festival lineups and 'deep focus' playlists. Their influence is seen in the rise of 'melodic techno' that prioritizes harmonic complexity over pure dancefloor utility.
