Kemialliset Ystävät

Murky, playful Finnish folk filtered through broken electronics and tape loops. A dusty, ritualistic collage that feels like a forest coming to life in a basement.

Intro

Listening to Kemialliset Ystävät is like stumbling upon a secret ritual being performed by woodland spirits using only the junk they found in a 1970s elementary school music room. The sound is thick, organic, and intentionally 'mouldy,' blending the recognizable pluck of mandolins and acoustic guitars with the unpredictable chirps of circuit-bent toys and warped samples. It is music that feels deeply rooted in a specific Finnish soil, yet it is constantly being rearranged by an avant-garde, collage-based logic.

What makes Jan Anderzén's project so distinctive is the tension between the 'joyful noise' of group improvisation and the 'brutal editing' of the studio process. While the instruments are often traditional or even primitive, the way they are layered into 'laminal mudcakes' creates a dense, psychedelic fog. It is never quite folk and never quite electronic; it exists in a third space where medieval melodies are eaten away by digital decay and tape hiss, resulting in a sound that is both ancient and futuristic.

For those looking to dive in, Alkuhärkä is the definitive starting point, capturing the project's peak 'free folk' era with its hypnotic, swirling textures. If you prefer something slightly more structured but no less strange, Alas rattoisaa virtaa offers a more recent glimpse into their evolving, kaleidoscopic soundscapes. It is perfect for listeners who want to feel like they are disappearing into a strange, beautiful, and slightly damp ecosystem.

Kemialliset Ystävät (Finnish for "Chemical Friends") is the name of a recording project of musician Jan Anderzén of Tampere, Finland. Anderzén began recording under the name in 1995 and although he has enlisted numerous musicians over the years, most Kemialliset Ystävät recordings are solo productions. Often labeled as psychedelic folk, his recordings have included such diverse instruments as detuned guitars, mandolins, balalaikas, toys, hand percussion, and samples from recordings by Sun Ra, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Vibracathedral Orchestra.
