Kayah (Katarzyna Rooijens) is a central figure in the Polish music industry, evolving from a session vocalist in the late 1980s to a multi-platinum solo artist and influential label head. Her career is marked by distinct stylistic pivots: the jazz-inflected soul of 'Kamień' (1995), the American R&B and funk leanings of 'Zebra' (1997), and the massive cultural phenomenon of her 1999 collaboration with Goran Bregović.
This latter project, 'Kayah i Bregović', remains one of the best-selling albums in Polish history, effectively introducing Balkan folk-pop to the mainstream. Beyond her performance career, she co-founded Kayax, a label that has become a vital hub for alternative and indie music in Poland. Her critical standing is bolstered by numerous Fryderyk awards and her ability to collaborate across borders, including work with Cesária Évora and Idan Raichel. She is viewed as a bridge between the traditional Polish pop establishment and the more adventurous world and jazz scenes.
