Kasai Allstars

Electrified Congolese ritual music that hits like a garage rock band. Distorted thumb pianos and massive polyrhythms create a raw, hypnotic, and futuristic trance.

Intro

Imagine a 25-piece orchestra where every instrument is fighting for air through a blown-out speaker. This is the sound of Kasai Allstars: a collision of ancient ritual and DIY electricity. It is dense, loud, and uncompromisingly rhythmic. The music centers on the likembe (thumb piano), but not as you know it. Here, it is amplified with contact mics and fed through distortion, creating a buzzing, metallic grit that sounds more like a fuzz-pedal guitar than a traditional folk instrument.

What makes them truly distinctive is the friction. By bringing together musicians from five different ethnic groups with historically clashing traditions, they have created a sound that feels like it's constantly negotiating with itself. The polyrhythms are dizzying, layering 5/4 over 4/4 in a way that feels natural yet impossible to fully untangle. It is 'Congotronics' at its most sophisticated, trading the minimalism of their peers for a lush, chaotic wall of sound.

Start with 'In the 7th Moon...' to hear the collective at their most explosive. It’s the perfect entry point for anyone who thinks they've heard everything 'world music' has to offer but hasn't yet experienced the raw, distorted power of the Kinshasa underground. It is music that demands your full attention and a lot of volume.

Kasai Allstars are a 25-piece musical collective based in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The musicians are from the Kasaï region, originating from five different ethnic groups: the Songye, Lulua, Tetela, Luba, and Luntu. The collective includes members active in bands, including Masanka Sankayi and Basokin. Some of these groups have endured conflicting relationships over the centuries, and they each have their own culture, their own language, and their own musical traditions. These were always thought to be incompatible until the musicians decided to pool their resources and form a collective. Their records were produced, recorded & mixed by Vincent Kenis, a Belgian producer with interest in Congolese music.
