Kargo is a foundational pillar of the Turkish alternative rock scene, emerging in the early 1990s and reaching their creative zenith in the late 90s. While their debut 'Sil Baştan' featured a different lineup, the 'classic' quintet formed in 1994 - led by the songwriting of bassist Mehmet Şenol Şişli and the charismatic vocals of Koray Candemir - redefined the genre.
Their sound identity is characterized by a sophisticated use of keyboards and effects-laden guitars, moving away from the blues-based structures of earlier Turkish rock toward a more European art-rock and synth-pop aesthetic. Their 1998 album 'Yalnızlık Mevsimi' is widely cited by critics as one of the most important Turkish rock albums of all time, noted for its cohesive atmosphere and philosophical lyrics. Despite multiple lineup changes and hiatuses, their influence persists through their impact on the '90s generation' of Turkish rock, bridging the gap between mainstream pop-rock and underground alternative scenes.
