Gritty London street jazz meets broken beat grooves. Rhodes-heavy improvisations that feel like a late-night drive through a neon-lit metropolis.
Kamaal Williams creates a sound that is fundamentally inseparable from the pulse of modern London. It is jazz, but it carries the DNA of the dance floor, stripping away the academic stiffness often associated with the genre and replacing it with the raw, syncopated energy of broken beat and house. The music is anchored by his signature Rhodes piano work, which alternates between shimmering, ethereal chords and aggressive, percussive stabs that drive the rhythm forward.
What makes his approach distinctive is the 'Wu Funk' philosophy: a seamless blend of 70s fusion, hip-hop sensibilities, and electronic production. It feels spontaneous and alive, often sounding like a high-stakes jam session captured in a high-end studio. There is a specific tension in the way the drums interact with the keys, creating a pocket that is both incredibly tight and loosely improvisational, making it as suitable for deep listening as it is for a late-night lounge atmosphere.
To understand the hype, start with 'The Return'. It serves as the perfect bridge between his collaborative work in Yussef Kamaal and his solo identity, showcasing the heavy grooves and cinematic urban textures that define his catalog. If you prefer something more intimate and stripped back, his recent live piano recordings in Tokyo offer a glimpse into the melodic core of his songwriting without the electronic dressing.
Kamaal Williams (born Henry Gilbert Williams, 14 December 1989) is a British musician and record producer. He began his career producing house and broken beat music as Henry Wu, but rose to prominence with drummer Yussef Dayes as Yussef Kamaal, releasing their only album Black Focus (2016). Williams has since released three solo albums under his record label Black Focus, including The Return (2018), Wu Hen (2020), and Stings (2023). Williams' musical style relies on improvisation, including live performances, and he creates music under his own genre of jazz, hip-hop, R&B and EDM which he dubs "Wu Funk". In 2024, he was accused of sexual assault by multiple women.
