Bright, pastoral symphonic rock that feels like a sunrise over a Swedish forest. Intricate keyboards and soaring melodies for fans of expansive, optimistic prog.
Kaipa is a cornerstone of the Swedish progressive rock scene, originally formed in 1973. Led by keyboardist and primary composer Hans Lundin, the band's history is split into two distinct eras: their foundational 1970s run and their 21st-century resurgence.
The early era is notable for introducing the world to guitarist Roine Stolt, whose melodic sensibility would later define The Flower Kings. During this time, Kaipa established a uniquely Swedish 'symphonic' sound that blended the complexity of Yes and Genesis with local folk traditions and a bright, major-key melodicism. After a long hiatus starting in 1982, the band reformed in 2000 with a supergroup lineup including Stolt, Jonas Reingold, and Morgan Ågren. This second phase moved toward a more maximalist, high-energy production style while retaining the pastoral, nature-focused themes of their youth. Even after Stolt's second departure in 2005, replaced by the virtuosic Per Nilsson, the band has remained prolific, consistently releasing albums that are critically lauded for their technical proficiency and unwavering commitment to a joyful, expansive prog-rock aesthetic.
