Elegant minimal techno that wears its heart on its sleeve. Shimmering disco loops and deadpan vocals create a sophisticated, bittersweet mood for late night city life.
Justus Köhncke makes dance music for people who enjoy the intellectual side of a groove as much as the physical one. It is a sound defined by the 'Cologne School' of minimal techno, where every kick drum is precise and every synth line is polished to a mirror finish. Yet, unlike some of his more clinical peers, Köhncke injects a deep sense of romanticism and disco-inflected warmth into his tracks, often using shimmering loops that feel like a memory of a party rather than the party itself.
What truly sets him apart is his willingness to embrace pop structures and vocal delivery within a techno framework. His voice is often deadpan and understated, delivering lyrics in German or English that touch on longing, nostalgia, and the strange beauty of urban life. It is music that feels equally at home in a high-concept art gallery or a basement club at 4 AM, balancing a certain kitschy charm with rigorous production standards.
If you are new to his work, start with the album 'Doppelleben'. It perfectly captures his ability to blend the motorik drive of Krautrock with the glitter of disco and the restraint of minimal techno. It is an essential document of the Kompakt label's golden era and a masterclass in how to make electronic music feel deeply human.
