Grand, earnest power ballads and soaring orchestral pop. The definitive sound of Eurovision glory, built for big emotions and even bigger key changes.
Johnny Logan is the undisputed king of the high-stakes pop ballad. His music occupies that specific, shimmering space where 1980s production meets timeless Irish melodicism. It is music that isn't afraid to be big, reaching for the rafters with orchestral swells, dramatic piano motifs, and a vocal delivery that treats every lyric like a life-altering confession. There is a palpable warmth to his sound, a mix of studio polish and genuine folk-rooted sincerity.
What truly sets Logan apart is his mastery of the 'contest' format: the way he builds tension through a verse only to release it in a massive, cathartic chorus. His voice possesses a distinctive tremolo and a range that allows him to move from a vulnerable whisper to a powerful, resonant belt. It is the sound of professional craftsmanship meeting deep emotional investment, characterized by those iconic key changes that signal a shift from reflection to triumph.
Start with the 1987 classic 'Hold Me Now' to hear the peak of his songwriting and performance power. For a more melancholic, jazz-tinged experience, 'What's Another Year' showcases his ability to handle quiet desperation. These tracks represent the gold standard of European pop history, perfect for moments that require a soundtrack as large as the feelings they evoke.
Seán Patrick Michael Sherrard (born 13 May 1954), also known professionally as Johnny Logan, is an Australian-born Irish singer, songwriter and musician. He is known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest twice, in 1980 and 1987. He also composed the winning song in 1992. Logan won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980 with the song "What's Another Year", which topped the charts in eight countries. He won for a second time in 1987 with the song "Hold Me Now", which topped the charts in Israel, Ireland and Belgium and was a top ten hit in ten other music markets. For 36 years he was only solo artist to have won the contest twice, until Loreen's second victory in 2023. Logan has also composed two Eurovision songs for Linda Martin, "Terminal 3" in 1984 and "Why Me?" in 1992. The former placed second, while the latter came first; therefore making Logan one of only five people to have composed two winning Eurovision entries.
