Intro

John Paul Young embodies the sun-drenched, optimistic peak of 1970s Australian pop. His music is characterized by a seamless blend of glam rock energy and sophisticated disco rhythms, all anchored by his clear, approachable tenor. It is the sound of a studio at the height of its powers, utilizing lush string sections and tight, driving basslines that feel both expensive and intimately human.

What truly distinguishes Young is his association with the legendary Vanda & Young production team. This partnership infused his tracks with a rhythmic precision and melodic hook-density that rivaled the best of the era's global output. While he is often categorized as disco, there is a theatrical, almost vaudevillian charm to his delivery that betrays his background in musical theater, giving the songs an emotional weight beyond simple club fodder.

To understand his impact, start with the ubiquitous 'Love Is In The Air' for its pure pop perfection, but dive into 'Yesterday's Hero' or 'I Hate the Music' to hear the grit and glam-rock swagger that defined his early career. It is essential listening for anyone who loves the intersection of 70s rock and the burgeoning dance culture of the late decade.

John Inglis Young, OAM (born 21 June 1950), known professionally as John Paul Young, is an Australian pop singer who is best known for having a worldwide hit with "Love Is in the Air" in 1978. His career was boosted by regular appearances as a performer and guest host on Countdown, a 1974–1987 TV series for Australia's national broadcaster ABC. Besides "Love Is in the Air", Young had top ten chart success in Germany and the Netherlands with "Standing in the Rain" and four other top ten hits in South Africa, including No. 1 hits with "I Hate the Music" in 1976 and "Yesterday's Hero" in 1975. On 27 August 2009, Young was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame.
