Jikustik

Formed in Yogyakarta in 1996, Jikustik emerged as a cornerstone of the Indonesian pop rock scene during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Originally led by the distinctive songwriting and vocals of Pongki Barata, the band helped define the 'Jogja sound' - a blend of melodic pop, soft rock, and poetic lyricism that contrasted with the more aggressive rock coming out of Jakarta at the time.

Their debut album, 'Seribu Tahun' (2000), was a massive commercial success, establishing them as masters of the radio-friendly ballad. Throughout the 2000s, they maintained a consistent presence on the charts with a series of albums that explored themes of romantic devotion and loss. The band underwent a significant transition when Pongki departed, eventually finding a new voice in Brian Prasetyoadi, whose softer vocal timbre allowed the band to maintain their 'easy listening' identity while refreshing their sound for a new decade. Critically, they are respected for their melodic consistency and their role in the evolution of Indonesian adult contemporary music. They remain a nostalgic touchstone for the millennial generation in Indonesia while continuing to release new material that adheres to their romantic, piano-driven foundations.
