Warped, lounge-inflected pop that feels like a cartoon character having an existential crisis. Wonky synths and deadpan vocals for the strange hours.
Jerry Paper sounds like the background music for a high-definition simulation of a 1970s lounge act, played back through a slightly melting cassette tape. The music is characterized by rubbery basslines, pitch-warped synthesizers, and a rhythmic sensibility that feels intentionally off-kilter, as if the instruments are trying to find their footing on a slippery floor. It is cozy yet deeply uncanny, wrapping the listener in a warm blanket of analog hiss while whispering strange truths about the nature of reality.
What makes the project distinctive is the persona of Lucas Nathan, who performs as a sort of cosmic weirdo in silk robes. The vocals are delivered with a deadpan, almost bored sincerity that contrasts sharply with the surreal and often humorous lyrical content. While many bedroom pop artists lean into simple nostalgia, Jerry Paper uses the tools of vaporwave and soft rock to explore complex philosophical themes like simulacra, identity, and the absurdity of modern existence, all while maintaining a groove that makes you want to sway awkwardly.
Start with 'Big Pop for Chameleon World' to hear the project at its most conceptually pure, or dive into 'Abracadabra' for a more polished, full-band realization of the Jerry Paper sound. It is music for people who find comfort in the strange and who prefer their pop songs with a side of existential dread and a wink of irony.
