Jandek is the recording project of Sterling Smith, a Houston-based musician who has maintained one of the most rigorous enigmas in music history since 1978. Operating through his label Corwood Industries, Smith has released over 120 albums characterized by a highly idiosyncratic, atonal approach to folk and blues.

His sound identity is defined by 'open' guitar tunings that ignore traditional scales, a flat vocal delivery, and a total lack of conventional production. Historically, Jandek represents the pinnacle of 'outsider music,' a term used to describe artists working entirely outside the commercial and cultural mainstream. His influence is vast among the avant-garde, counting Kurt Cobain and Thurston Moore as fans.
