Insekt is a seminal Belgian electronic project formed in 1989 by Mario Vaerewijck (Vomito Negro) and Eric Van Wonterghem (The Klinik, Monolith, Sonar). As a supergroup of the Belgian EBM scene, they refined the 'Belgian Sound' by introducing more sophisticated sampling techniques and a colder, more melodic synth aesthetic than their predecessors.
Their sound identity is defined by the 'Insekt' signature: a combination of high-energy rhythmic pulses, distorted vocals, and sharp, icy synth leads. Throughout the early 1990s, they were a dominant force in the electro-industrial underground, notably cited by U2 as a favorite act during the 'Achtung Baby' era, which highlighted Insekt's influence on the broader industrial-rock crossover. After a hiatus starting in 1994, the duo reunited in 2003, proving the enduring relevance of their 'old school' EBM foundations. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the primitive aggression of 80s industrial and the more polished, atmospheric techno-industrial of the late 90s.
