Intro

Inner City is the sound of the club at its most optimistic and inclusive. Born from the industrial grit of Detroit techno but polished with the soulful warmth of Chicago house, their music bridges the gap between underground credibility and pop accessibility. It is characterized by driving, syncopated drum machine rhythms and bright, soaring synth stabs that demand movement.

What truly sets them apart is the vocal presence of Paris Grey, whose powerhouse delivery brings a human, gospel-like intensity to Kevin Saunderson's mechanical precision. While their peers often leaned into darker, more repetitive textures, Inner City embraced melody and song structure, creating anthems that feel as much like communal prayers as they do dance tracks.

Start with the 1989 debut album 'Paradise' (or 'Big Fun' in the US). It contains the essential blueprint for 90s dance music, featuring the title track and the immortal 'Good Life.' These songs aren't just relics of an era; they are foundational texts for anyone who loves the intersection of soul and synthesis.

Inner City is an American electronic music group that formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1987. The group was originally composed of the record producer and composer Kevin Saunderson (born September 5, 1964) and the Chicago, Illinois, vocalist Paris Grey (born November 5, 1965). Saunderson is one of the Belleville Three—along with Juan Atkins and Derrick May—high school friends who later originated the Detroit techno sound. In February 2018, Billboard magazine ranked them as the 69th most successful dance artists of all-time.
