Indian Summer

Indian Summer was a seminal force in the mid-1990s Oakland hardcore scene, serving as a primary architect of what would become known as screamo or 'real emo.' Their sound identity is built on the 'loud-soft' dynamic popularized by Slint but pushed to a more desperate, punk-inflected extreme.

They are characterized by their use of spoken-word interludes, clean-toned melodic guitar work, and chaotic, distorted climaxes where vocals become percussive and unintelligible. Despite a brief existence between 1993 and 1994, their influence is immense, bridging the gap between the first wave of DC emocore and the more technical screamo of the late 90s like Saetia. Critical consensus views them as a 'band's band,' essential for understanding the evolution of post-hardcore. Their discography is largely composed of scattered 7-inch singles and compilation tracks, which adds to their cult status among collectors and crate diggers of the DIY punk underground.
