Intro

U-ka Saegusa IN db embodies the quintessential 'Giza Studio' sound of the early to mid-2000s. It is music that feels inherently sunny yet carries a faint, bittersweet edge of nostalgia. The production is clean and band-oriented, favoring real drums and bright electric guitars over the heavy synthesizers that dominated other pop of the era. It’s a sound that feels grounded and approachable, like a local band that happened to write world-class hooks.

What truly sets them apart is Saegusa's vocal delivery. She possesses a light, breathy quality that feels intimate rather than powerful, often layered in the mix to create a shimmering, ethereal effect against the more muscular rock instrumentation. This contrast between the 'soft' vocals and the 'solid' pop-rock backing creates a unique tension that defined their biggest hits, particularly those associated with the Detective Conan franchise.

For those looking to dive in, the best-of compilation 'Smile & Tears' is the essential starting point. It perfectly captures the two sides of their identity: the upbeat, driving pop-rock anthems and the more reflective, sentimental ballads that showcase Saegusa's songwriting sensibility. It is the perfect soundtrack for a long drive or a productive afternoon of creative work.

U-ka saegusa IN db (三枝夕夏 IN db(イン デシベル), Saegusa Yūka in Deshiberu (in Decibel)) was a Japanese pop rock band formed in Osaka in 2002. The band consists of lead vocalist U-ka Saegusa, lead guitarist Yūichirō Iwai, lead bassist Taku Ōyabu, and drummer Keisuke Kurumatani. Signed to Giza Studio, the band released four studio albums before disbanding in 2010. They're known for performing several theme songs for the Japanese anime series, Case Closed. One of the songs, "Kimi to Yakusoku Shita Yasashii Ano Basho made", became the band's best-selling single, selling approximately 34,000 copies nationwide.
