Imatran Voima

High-voltage Finnish electro that fuses the bounce of Miami Bass with a gritty, industrial edge. Aggressive, playful, and built for dark basements.

Intro

Imatran Voima sounds like a high-tension power line snapping in the middle of a Miami block party. It is music built on the skeletal, syncopated foundations of the Roland TR-808, but infused with a distinctly cold, Northern European grit. The bass is heavy and physical, while the synths oscillate between playful melodies and jagged, industrial textures that feel like they were recorded in an electrical substation.

What truly sets them apart is their ability to balance genuine dancefloor aggression with a sense of subversive humor. While many electro acts take themselves with deadly seriousness, this duo embraces the camp and kitsch of the genre's history, using vocoders not just for robotic texture but to deliver deadpan, often satirical lyrics. It is a high-energy collision of old-school breakbeats and modern electronic filth.

Start with the compilation 12s 2002-2004 to hear them at their most essential. It captures the raw energy of their early vinyl releases, showcasing the evolution from pure bass worship to a more complex, hard-hitting sound that defined the Finnish electro scene of the early 2000s.

Imatran Voima is an electro music duo of Randy Barracuda (also known as Perttu Häkkinen, born 1979) and Fresh O. Lexxx (also known as Jaakko Kestilä), hailing from Helsinki, Finland. Their music is heavily influenced by Miami Bass, and they run their own record label Kostamus Records. Imatran Voima took their name from the Finnish electricity company of the same name (now part of Fortum). They have also covered songs by Iron Maiden and Finnish gothic rock band Two Witches. Häkkinen died in 2018.
