Cinematic breaks and moody sub-bass that feel like a high-speed chase through a rain-slicked city. Sophisticated electronic music for late nights and focused energy.
Ils creates a sound that is simultaneously muscular and elegant, bridging the gap between the raw energy of the underground rave and the polished sophistication of a film score. His music is defined by 'nu-skool' breaks: complex, syncopated drum patterns that carry a heavy weight without ever feeling cluttered. There is a distinct sense of urban noir throughout his catalog, characterized by minor-key melodies and deep, rolling basslines that seem to echo through empty city streets.
What truly sets him apart is his ability to weave organic textures into digital frameworks. You will hear haunting string sections and soulful, often ethereal vocal fragments floating over industrial-strength percussion. This contrast creates a tension that is both restless and deeply immersive. It is music that demands movement but rewards close, analytical listening, revealing layers of meticulous engineering and subtle jazz-inflected harmonies upon repeat visits.
For those new to his sound, 'Bohemia' is the essential starting point, showcasing his most realized fusion of dancefloor power and lush, atmospheric production. If you prefer something slightly more experimental and raw, his earlier work on 'Idiots Behind the Wheel' captures the foundational energy of the UK breaks scene. It is the perfect soundtrack for moments that require both focus and a bit of an edge.
Illian Walker, better known as Ils or iLS, is an English musician and producer, who has released records on labels including Marine Parade and Distinct'ive Records. Born in London, Ils started his production career on LTJ Bukem's drum and bass label, Good Looking Records. He was signed to Marine Parade by owner Adam Freeland, who cited Ils' unique breaks production. Ils is influenced by electro, funk, and techno artists in his Idiots Behind the Wheel album. His Soul Trader album represented a more even sound, with few particularly energetic or downbeat tracks. He also mixed an album for Distinct'ive Records' Y4k series. His 2002 single, "Next Level", on Marine Parade spent one week at #75 in the UK Singles Chart, in February 2002. It was released on his second studio album, Soul Trader, as "6 Space (Next Level)".
