Intro

ili creates a sonic space that feels remarkably close, as if she is singing directly into your ear from across a small, dimly lit room. Her sound is a sophisticated evolution of the singer-songwriter tradition, trading acoustic tropes for shimmering digital textures and minimalist electronic pulses. It is music that prioritizes emotional clarity over grandiosity, favoring subtle shifts in mood and atmosphere.

What truly distinguishes ili is the specific texture of her vocal delivery. She utilizes a breathy, almost whispered technique that is often layered to create a soft, choral effect. This intimacy is balanced by a modern production aesthetic that incorporates crisp drum machines and liquid synth lines, bridging the gap between DIY bedroom pop and high-end electropop. Her songs often feel like internal monologues set to a steady, hypnotic beat.

For those looking to dive in, her 2019 EP 'Changes' serves as the perfect bridge from her early career into her current identity. It showcases her ability to turn personal growth into catchy, atmospheric pop. From there, her more recent singles like 'Gelato' demonstrate a more confident, groove-oriented direction while maintaining her signature vulnerability.

Emily Middlemas (born 26 September 1998), known professionally as Ili (stylised in all lowercase), is a Scottish singer-songwriter. In 2014, she auditioned for the eleventh series of The X Factor but did not progress to the live shows. She returned two years later for the thirteenth series, where she finished in fourth place. She competed in both under her birth name, Emily Middlemas, but in 2019, she began using her stage name and independently released her debut extended play, Changes.
