Gritty, piano-driven rock with a street-poet's soul. Defiant anthems and bittersweet ballads for the permanent outsider in a leather jacket.
Ian Hunter sounds like the smartest guy in the roughest bar in town. His music is a masterclass in the intersection of glam rock's theatricality and the raw, unvarnished honesty of a pub rock singer-songwriter. It is built on a foundation of rolling honky-tonk piano, jagged electric guitars, and a voice that sounds like it has survived a thousand late nights and just as many cigarettes.
What makes Hunter truly distinctive is his ability to pivot from snarling, high-energy rock anthems to deeply vulnerable, cinematic ballads without losing his edge. He possesses a Dylanesque gift for storytelling, populating his songs with 'alien boys' and rock-and-roll casualties, all delivered with a weary but resilient wisdom. His long-standing partnership with Mick Ronson added a layer of sophisticated guitar arrangement that elevated his sound beyond standard classic rock.
New listeners should start with his 1975 self-titled solo debut. It perfectly captures his post-Mott the Hoople transition, featuring the quintessential hit 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy' alongside sprawling, emotional epics. It is the definitive entry point for anyone who loves rock music that feels both lived-in and larger than life.
Ian Hunter Patterson (born 3 June 1939) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band Mott the Hoople, from its inception in 1969 to its dissolution in 1974, and at the time of its 2009, 2013, and 2019 reunions. Hunter was a musician and songwriter before joining Mott the Hoople, and continued in this vein after he left the band. He embarked on a solo career despite ill health and disillusionment with commercial success, and often worked in collaboration with Mick Ronson, David Bowie's sideman and arranger from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars period. Mott the Hoople achieved some commercial success, and attracted a small but devoted fan base. As a solo artist, Hunter charted with lesser-known but more wide-ranging works outside the rock mainstream. His best-known solo songs are "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", later covered by Great White, and "England Rocks", which was modified to "Cleveland Rocks" and then covered by The Presidents of the United States of America, and became one of the theme songs used for the American TV series The Drew Carey Show.
