I Like Trains (formerly iLiKETRAiNS) emerged from the Leeds indie scene in the mid-2000s, carving out a unique niche that blended the crescendos of post-rock with the narrative precision of chamber pop and the gloom of post-punk. Their early work, most notably 'Elegies to Lessons Learnt', established a signature style of 'historical post-rock', using David Martin's deadpan baritone to recount tales of Bobby Fischer, Captain Scott, and the Great Plague.
This intellectual rigor earned them critical comparisons to a war memorial or a museum, emphasizing their sound's civic and somber weight. Over time, their sound evolved from orchestral swells toward the motorik, synth-inflected textures of 'The Shallows' and the more overtly political, aggressive edge of 'Kompromat'.
