High-energy bluegrass that balances instrumental virtuosity with soulful vocal harmonies. It is the sound of a mountain morning and a Saturday night dance floor.
Hot Rize formed in 1978 in Boulder, Colorado, and quickly became one of the most influential bluegrass ensembles of the post-pioneer era. The original lineup featured Tim O'Brien, Pete Wernick, Charles Sawtelle, and Nick Forster.
They are credited with bridging the gap between the first generation of bluegrass (Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs) and the 'newgrass' movement, maintaining traditional structures while introducing a modern, professional stage presence and high-fidelity production values. A unique aspect of their career was their alter-ego band, Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers, which allowed them to explore western swing and honky-tonk. Following the death of guitarist Charles Sawtelle, the band eventually recruited flat-picking virtuoso Bryan Sutton, ensuring their continued relevance. Their induction into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2025 cements their status as architects of the modern bluegrass sound, influencing nearly every progressive acoustic act that followed.
