Hooded Menace

Hooded Menace is a cornerstone of the modern death-doom revival, formed in 2007 by Lasse Pyykkö in Joensuu, Finland. The project serves as a bridge between the Finnish death metal tradition (Phlegethon, Abhorrence) and the melodic doom sensibilities of the 'Peaceville Three.'

Their sound identity is defined by a 'cavernous' production style, characterized by down-tuned guitars with immense sustain and a vocal approach that sits at the lowest possible register of human hearing. Throughout their career, they have evolved from the raw, crust-influenced grit of 'Fulfill the Curse' to the more sophisticated, harmonically dense arrangements of 'The Tritonus Bell.' They occupy a specific cultural niche that intersects extreme metal with cult horror cinema, often incorporating samples and thematic structures from Spanish and Italian horror films. Critically, they are lauded for maintaining the 'old school' spirit without falling into derivative tropes, specifically through their ability to weave catchy, traditional metal melodies into an otherwise suffocatingly heavy framework.
