Cinematic post-hardcore with soaring, operatic vocals and lush, atmospheric guitars. It is music for big feelings and late-night reflection.
Holding Absence creates a sound that is simultaneously massive and intimate. It is built on the foundation of modern post-hardcore but elevated by a cinematic, almost theatrical sense of scale. The guitars often shimmer with the delay and reverb of shoegaze, creating a 'wall of sound' that feels like a warm embrace rather than an assault. It is music that captures the specific ache of being human, turning personal turmoil into something grand and beautiful.
What truly sets them apart is the vocal performance of Lucas Woodland. Eschewing the typical grit of the genre for a pure, operatic clarity, his voice carries a rare emotional weight. The band masters the art of the crescendo, building from quiet, piano-led moments or ambient textures into explosive, anthemic choruses that demand a physical response. It is 'dreamcore' at its most refined, blending the aggression of melodic hardcore with the ethereal beauty of post-rock.
Start with 'The Greatest Mistake of My Life' to hear the band at their most conceptually ambitious. If you prefer something more immediate and punchy, 'The Noble Art of Self Destruction' offers a perfect entry point into their high-energy, emotionally-charged world. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who finds beauty in sadness and strength in vulnerability.
