Intro

Hiro's music is a masterclass in the intersection of high-gloss J-pop and soulful R&B. Her voice, a remarkably clear and agile soprano, anchors every track with an effortless grace that feels both intimate and expansive. The production often leans into the lush, expensive sound of the turn-of-the-millennium, featuring shimmering synths, crisp percussion, and warm basslines that provide a sophisticated bed for her melodic explorations.

What truly sets her apart is the evolution from the high-energy girl group dynamics of SPEED into a solo artist capable of tackling complex jazz standards and mature, mid-tempo soul. There is a specific Okinawan warmth that occasionally peeks through her phrasing, giving her pop sensibilities a grounded, organic heart. Her ability to layer breathy harmonies creates a sonic cushion that feels like a soft embrace.

Start with her debut solo single 'AS TIME GOES BY' to hear the peak of late-90s pop perfection, then move to the 'Brilliant' album for a deeper dive into her R&B leanings. For those seeking her more sophisticated side, the Coco d'Or project reveals her surprising depth as a jazz vocalist, proving her versatility far exceeds the typical idol trajectory.

Hiroko Shimabukuro (島袋 寛子, Shimabukuro Hiroko; born 7 April 1984), best known mononymously as hiro, is a Japanese singer. She debuted as a member of the popular girl group Speed in 1996. In 1998, hiro released her first solo song, "Mitsumete Itai", as a B-side to Speed's single "All My True Love". She made her official solo debut in 1999 with the single "As Time Goes By", which sold 800,000 copies in Japan. In 2022 she released her fourth studio album called "0".
