Hillstomp

Raucous, junk-pile blues played on buckets and cans. A high-energy collision of Mississippi trance rhythms and Pacific Northwest punk grit for late nights.

Intro

Hillstomp sounds like a junkyard orchestra playing the blues at a punk house. It is a thick, rhythmic racket built on the foundation of North Mississippi hill country trance, but stripped of any polite polish. The percussion is literal clatter. Buckets, cans, and BBQ lids provide a metallic, industrial thud that feels more like a heartbeat than a standard drum kit. Over this, the slide guitar screams and moans with a distorted, vintage warmth that sounds like it was recorded through a telephone from 1940.

What makes them truly distinctive is their 'duct-tape' aesthetic. They take the hypnotic, repetitive structures of R.L. Burnside and weld them to the frantic energy of the Portland underground. It is music that feels handmade and dangerous, relying on the physical effort of the performance rather than studio trickery. The vocals are gravel-pit raw, delivered with a sincerity that avoids the 'blues-man' caricature often found in modern revivalist acts.

Start with 'The Woman That Ended the World' to hear their most iconic blend of Appalachian folk and punkabilly. It captures that specific moment where traditional storytelling meets a chaotic, DIY energy. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who likes their blues with a side of rust and a lot of volume.

Hillstomp is an American punk blues duo consisting of Henry Hill Kammerer and John "Lord Buckets" Johnson from Portland, Oregon, known for unique versions of traditional material and energetic live performances. They are also known for original material. Notable originals include "Northeast Portland 3AM", "Lucy's Lament" and "Graverobber's Blues". Hillstomp was featured in the third season of "Sons of Anarchy". Hillstomp has toured the US, and Europe since 2002. In December 2005, their album The Woman that Ended the World was named Album of the Year by Portland alternative weekly Willamette Week. Hillstomp credits R.L. Burnside as one of their biggest musical influences. They are considered to be forerunners in the modern two piece blues revival, along with the Black Keys, Doo Rag, and the White Stripes.
