Helmet is a pivotal New York City band that bridged the gap between the noise rock of the Amphetamine Reptile scene and the commercial explosion of alternative metal. Formed by Page Hamilton in 1989, the band's sound is characterized by 'drop-D' tuning, staccato riffing, and a high-tension rhythmic approach that influenced an entire generation of nu-metal and post-hardcore bands.
Unlike their contemporaries, Helmet eschewed metal tropes for a 'regular guy' aesthetic, which, combined with their cerebral approach to songwriting, earned them the 'thinking man's metal' label. Their 1992 album Meantime remains a touchstone of the era, showcasing Hamilton's ability to fuse high-art dissonance with massive, radio-friendly grooves.
