Hell on Wheels

Hell on Wheels is a quintessential fixture of the Swedish indie rock explosion that occurred at the turn of the millennium. Formed in Stockholm in 1994, the trio - consisting of Rickard Lindgren, Åsa Sohlgren, and Johan Risberg - developed a sound that bridged the gap between the noisy experimentation of the US indie scene (think Pavement or Built to Spill) and the melodic sensibilities of UK C86-era pop.

Their early career was marked by a series of singles and EPs on the Make it Happen label, establishing a reputation for jagged, angular arrangements and Lindgren's polarizing yet charismatic vocal style. Their 2001 debut, 'There is a Generation of Handicapped People to Carry on', solidified their position in the 'North of Sweden' indie canon alongside peers like The Bear Quartet. Critically, they are often praised for their lack of pretension and their ability to maintain a 'garage' aesthetic even as their songwriting grew more sophisticated. While they never achieved massive commercial breakout status outside of Europe, they remain a cult favorite for their authentic, slightly eccentric contribution to the Scandinavian alternative rock landscape.
