Raw, hardware-driven electro and techno that feels like a live wire. Stripped-back analog grit for dark rooms and deep focus.
Helena Hauff sounds like the friction between metal and electricity. Her music is a masterclass in restraint and raw power, eschewing digital polish for the unpredictable warmth and hiss of vintage hardware. It is music that feels physically present, as if you can hear the vacuum tubes heating up and the magnetic tape spinning in the background. The rhythms are jagged, drawing heavily from the robotic funk of classic electro and the squelching urgency of acid house.
What sets her apart is a total commitment to the 'one-take' philosophy. There is a nervous energy in her tracks that comes from live improvisation on drum machines and modular synths. She doesn't hide the imperfections; she weaponizes them. The result is a sound that is cold and industrial on the surface but deeply human in its execution, characterized by a 'dirty' aesthetic that feels more authentic than the clinical precision of modern EDM.
For those new to her world, start with 'Discreet Desires'. It perfectly balances her aggressive, hardware-focused impulses with a haunting, melodic sensibility that borders on synth-wave. It is the ideal entry point for understanding how she can make a Roland TB-303 sound both like a weapon and a lonely mechanical voice.
Helena Hauff is a German DJ and record producer based in Hamburg, Germany. She is known for her "stripped-down techno and electro tracks" that are recorded using strictly analog equipment and draws influences from acid house, EBM and industrial music. Hauff, who has studied fine art, physics and systematic music science, previously worked as a DJ at Hamburg's Golden Pudel Club, where she hosted a night called Birds and Other Instruments. She released her debut record, Actio Reactio EP, in 2013. Following a series of releases from various different labels, including James Dean Brown's Hypnobeat record label, she released her debut full-length album, Discreet Desires, through Werkdiscs records in 2015. The album was listed as number 19 on Rolling Stone's list of "20 Best EDM and Electronic Albums of 2015." In December 2017, she became the first ever female DJ to be named BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix of the year. She runs her own label called "Return to Disorder".
