Hector

Heikki 'Hector' Harma is a foundational figure in Finnish popular music, serving as the bridge between the international folk revival and the birth of domestic rock (Suomirock). Beginning his career in 1965 with a Finnish version of 'Universal Soldier', he quickly evolved from a translator of Anglo-American hits into a visionary songwriter.

His 1970s output, particularly 'Herra Mirandos' and 'Hectorock I', redefined the commercial and artistic possibilities of the Finnish language in rock, utilizing complex metaphors and social commentary. Hector's sound identity is defined by his rich baritone, a preference for acoustic-led arrangements augmented by progressive rock flourishes, and a lyrical focus on existentialism, social justice, and Nordic melancholy. He is widely respected for his 'Finnicization' of artists like Neil Young and David Bowie, which helped educate a generation of Finnish listeners on global rock trends while grounding them in local cultural contexts.
