Head Like a Hole

Head Like a Hole (HLAH) emerged from Wellington, New Zealand in 1990, quickly establishing themselves as the 'enfant terribles' of the local rock scene. Their sound identity is characterized by a fusion of alternative metal, groove-oriented hard rock, and a noise-rock edge influenced by the likes of Nine Inch Nails and the Butthole Surfers.

They are historically significant within the 'Kiwi Rock' canon for providing a visceral, aggressive counterpoint to the more melodic 'Dunedin Sound' that dominated NZ music exports in the previous decade. Their career arc is marked by extreme performance art, including performing naked or caked in mud, which cemented their status as a must-see live act. Despite the tragic loss of their manager Gerald Dwyer in 1996, the band maintained a significant cultural footprint through the late 90s, frequently headlining the Big Day Out festival.
