Bite-sized bursts of joyful, lo-fi chamber pop. Eccentric trombone melodies and Casio beats meet earnest, whimsical reflections on the divine.
Half-handed Cloud sounds like a collection of musical Polaroids, each capturing a fleeting, brightly colored moment. John Ringhofer crafts songs that are remarkably short, often clocking in under two minutes, yet they are packed with more ideas than most full-length symphonies. The sound is defined by a charmingly rickety combination of warm brass, cheap electronic keyboards, and multi-tracked vocals that feel both intimate and communal.
What makes this project truly distinctive is the way it handles heavy subject matter with a light, almost childlike touch. Ringhofer explores deep theological questions and spiritual longing through the lens of playground pop. It is music that feels handmade and recycled, utilizing the sonic equivalent of cardboard and glitter to build something that feels genuinely sacred without ever becoming self-important or heavy-handed.
Start with 'Halos + Lassos' to hear the project at its most cohesive and vibrant. It perfectly showcases Ringhofer's ability to weave together trombone fanfares, Casio bleeps, and earnest lyrics into a tapestry of 'micro-narratives' that reward repeated, close listening.
Half-handed Cloud is an American recording project, based in Helsinki, Finland since 2015. It was started in 1999 as a one-man band by John Ringhofer, who created the band name based on an occurrence in the Old Testament. The majority of Half-handed Cloud's albums have been released on Asthmatic Kitty Records. His previous band was Wookieback with Matthew Vollmer and Brandon Buckner. Ringhofer, a vegetarian, lived rent free in return for his custodial services at a church in Berkeley, CA for a decade. John Ringhofer has collaborated with Sufjan Stevens on Half-handed Cloud's What's The Remedy? 7-inch, among other works such as Thy Is A Word And Feet Need Lamps, and 2014's Flying Scroll Flight Control. Daniel Smith of Danielson and Sounds Familyre is credited for helping to establish Half-handed Cloud's early days, and has been a frequent collaborator with John Ringhofer.
