High-energy Swedish indie rock with a restless, melodic heart. Anthemic guitars and distinctive vocals for rainy city walks and nostalgic late nights.
Hästpojken captures the specific, frantic energy of Swedish indie rock, blending shimmering pop melodies with a gritty, almost desperate urgency. The music feels like a rush of adrenaline tempered by the melancholic chill of a Northern autumn. It is defined by driving percussion and guitars that alternate between jangly brightness and distorted weight, creating a soundscape that is both expansive and deeply personal.
What truly sets them apart is Martin Elisson's vocal performance. His distinctive, slightly nasal, and highly emotive delivery carries a sense of youthful defiance and vulnerability. The songwriting often leans into anthemic choruses that feel designed for shouting along in a crowded basement or a muddy festival field, yet the lyrics maintain a sharp, observational quality that rewards closer listening.
Start with the album 'Från där jag ropar' to hear the band at their most cohesive and powerful. It perfectly balances their knack for immediate pop hooks with the sophisticated, slightly darker arrangements that have become their hallmark. It is the definitive sound of the Gothenburg indie scene matured but not tamed.
Hästpojken is a Swedish pop-rock group from Gothenburg. The origin of the name Hästpojken (literally horseboy in Swedish) remains a mystery. The band was founded in 2007 and originally consisted of Martin Elisson, vocalist from Bad Cash Quartet, Adam Bolméus, guitarist also from the same band and Lars Malmros (Pop-Lars) drummer from Broder Daniel. This line-up released the band's debut album Caligula in 2008. Elisson and Bolmeus would write most of materials. 2010 saw the follow-up album Från där jag ropar after which Lars Malmros left the band. The band would see many changes in the line-up. The band's third album is En magisk tanke released in 2013. In 2014, Hästpojken played with Göteborgs symfoniker. The band is preparing a new album for release in 2015. In 2014, Hästpojken was nominated as "best group" during P3 Guld awards.
