Ghostly, slow-motion post-rock that feels like a half-remembered dream. Murky guitars and whispered vocals for cold nights and quiet contemplation.
HṚṢṬA sounds like the quietest corners of a Montreal winter. It is music that exists in the spaces between notes, defined by Mike Moya's signature guitar work which feels less like playing and more like summoning spirits from a vintage amplifier. The sound is thick with reverb and analog warmth, creating a protective layer of fuzz around melodies that feel ancient and fragile. It is the sonic equivalent of a sepia-toned photograph of a landscape you can't quite place.
What truly distinguishes this project from its Constellation Records peers is the presence of Moya's vocals. Unlike the grand, orchestral crescendos of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, HṚṢṬA is intimate and insular. The vocals are often buried in the mix, acting as another textural element rather than a lead instrument. This creates a sense of 'distorted lullabies' where the boundary between psychedelic rock and slowcore becomes beautifully blurred.
Start with 'Ghosts Will Come and Kiss Our Eyes' for the most refined version of their haunting aesthetic. It is an album that rewards patience and deep listening, perfect for those moments when you want to disappear into a world that is equal parts eerie and comforting. It is essential listening for anyone who finds beauty in the murky, the slow, and the slightly broken.
Hrsta (stylized as HṚṢṬA) (; Sanskrit: हृष्ट hṛṣṭa [ɦr̩ʂʈɐ], 'thrilling with rapture', 'rejoiced') is a Montreal post-rock band currently signed to Constellation Records. The band's leader, Mike Moya (guitar and vocals), was one of the founding members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The other members of the band are Brooke Crouser, Harris Newman, and Eric Craven. Lisa Gamble joined in 2007 and Nick Kuepfer in 2009. Hrsta's sound has been compared to that of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Set Fire to Flames, owing to Mike Moya's contributions to each. Hrsta, however, differs from these previous projects in that it features Moya as a vocalist. Their latest album, Ghosts Will Come and Kiss Our Eyes, was released in the fall of 2007.
