Intro

Gypsy (originally The Underbeats) represents a pivotal but often overlooked link in the evolution of American progressive rock. Formed in Minnesota before relocating to Los Angeles to become the house band at the Whisky a Go Go, their sound was defined by the prolific songwriting of Enrico Rosenbaum.

Unlike the UK prog scene which often leaned into classical pastiche, Gypsy's complexity was rooted in jazz, Latin rhythms, and sophisticated vocal counterpoint reminiscent of CSNY but applied to a much heavier, organ-centric framework. Their 1970 debut is a landmark of the era, showcasing a high level of technical proficiency and studio ambition, including string arrangements by Jimmie Haskell. Despite critical acclaim and a cult following, the band's commercial trajectory was hampered by label transitions and the tragic passing of Rosenbaum. Historically, they are significant for being one of the first American bands to successfully integrate extended suite-like structures with the 'West Coast' vocal sound, influencing the more melodic side of the burgeoning prog-rock movement.
