Guilty Simpson

Heavyweight Detroit bars delivered with a bruising baritone over dusty, unquantized soul loops. Raw, uncompromising hip-hop for those who value grit over polish.

Intro

Guilty Simpson sounds like the industrial heart of Detroit personified. His voice is a blunt instrument, a thick baritone that cuts through dense, sample-heavy production with the authority of a man who has seen every side of the street. It is music that feels heavy, grounded, and physically imposing, favoring the 'thump' of a kick drum and the 'crack' of a snare over melodic fluff.

What sets him apart is his relationship with the beat. While many rappers fight for dominance, Guilty operates in a symbiotic lockstep with legendary producers like J Dilla and Madlib. He possesses a distinctive 'deadpan intensity' where he never sounds like he is trying too hard, yet every syllable carries significant weight. His lyrics balance hyper-vivid ghetto reportage with a dry, sometimes pitch-black sense of humor.

Start with 'Ode to the Ghetto' to hear the definitive bridge between Detroit's underground grit and the Stones Throw avant-garde aesthetic. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who misses the era when rap felt like a high-stakes conversation happening in a dimly lit alleyway.

Byron Dwayne "Guilty" Simpson is an American rapper and songwriter from Detroit, Michigan whose recording career spans more than 30 years. He is signed to Stones Throw Records, and is known for being one of the late producer J Dilla's favorite rappers. Simpson's debut album, Ode to the Ghetto, includes production from J Dilla, as well as from Madlib and Black Milk; all three have been frequent collaborators of his. Along with Black Milk and the late Sean Price, Guilty Simpson formed one-third of the rap trio Random Axe. Simpson is also affiliated with the Detroit hip-hop collective Almighty Dreadnaughtz. Guilty Simpson’s major rap influences are Big Daddy Kane, Scarface, Kool G Rap, and Ice Cube.
