Grits (Grammatical Revolution In the Spirit) emerged from Nashville, Tennessee, as a cornerstone of the Gotee Records roster in the mid-1990s. Founded by Stacey 'Coffee' Jones and Teron 'Bonafide' Carter - both former dancers for the crossover act DC Talk - the duo played a pivotal role in professionalizing the Christian hip-hop (CHH) subgenre.
Their sound evolved from the raw, boom-bap foundations of 'Mental Releases' to a more sophisticated, Southern-inflected alternative hip-hop style that gained significant mainstream traction. Their cultural footprint is anchored by the single 'Ooh Ahh (My Life),' which achieved RIAA Gold status and became a ubiquitous sync-licensing staple in films like 'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.' Critically, they are respected for their technical proficiency and their ability to maintain a spiritual core while adopting the sonic signatures of mainstream Southern rap. They served as a bridge between the early CCM-adjacent rap of the 90s and the more aggressive, chart-topping CHH movement of the 2010s led by artists like Lecrae.
