Gregorian

Gregorian is a German musical project led by producer Frank Peterson, a co-founder of Enigma. While the project debuted in 1991 with the pop-oriented 'Sadisfaction', it was re-conceptualized in 1998 into its most famous form: a male choir performing pop and rock covers in the style of Gregorian chant.

This pivot capitalized on the 'Enigmatic' new age trend of the 1990s but moved toward a more specific, performance-based choral aesthetic. The group's process is notable for its technical rigor; songs are selected only if they can be successfully transposed into the heptatonic scale characteristic of authentic chant. To maintain atmospheric integrity, Peterson famously records the 12-man vocal ensemble in churches under candlelight to avoid the 'cold' feel of modern studios. Culturally, Gregorian occupies a unique space in the 'Classical Crossover' market, blending liturgical tradition with symphonic rock and downtempo electronics. Their 'Masters of Chant' series has become a massive commercial success, particularly in Europe, influencing the broader 'New Age' and 'Celtic' music scenes by proving that monastic aesthetics could be applied to secular hits without losing their spiritual weight.
