Intro

Great Northern creates a sound that feels like a long, slow exhale in a cold room. It is built on a foundation of cinematic piano melodies and shimmering electric guitars that occupy the space between indie rock and dream pop. The music is characterized by a persistent sense of yearning, often anchored by the dual vocal interplay between Rachel Stolte and Solon Bixler, whose voices blend into a singular, breathy texture.

What sets them apart is their ability to make sadness feel expansive and beautiful rather than claustrophobic. Their production is dense and layered, using reverb as an instrument to create a sense of physical distance and atmosphere. While they utilize the structures of pop, they frequently subvert them with moody instrumental breaks and lyrics that dwell in the 'uncomfortable territory' of the human psyche.

Start with 'Trading Twilight for Daylight' to hear their most iconic blend of catchy hooks and atmospheric depth. It is the perfect introduction to their signature 'twilight' sound, offering songs that feel both intimate and grandly cinematic. It is essential listening for anyone who finds comfort in the melancholy of a rainy afternoon.

Great Northern is a rock group originally from Los Angeles composed of lead vocalist/multi instrumentalist Rachel Stolte, and guitarist/vocalist/multi instrumentalist Solon Bixler (formerly of Thirty Seconds to Mars). In 2007, they were signed with the independent label Eenie Meenie Records, where they released their debut album, Trading Twilight For Daylight (2007), and their second album, Remind Me Where the Light Is (2009).
