High-energy, trashy electroclash from the Oakland underground. Lo-fi Casio beats and explicit queercore rap for basement parties and neon-soaked nights.
Gravy Train!!!! sounds like a Casio keyboard that has been soaked in cheap beer and glitter. Their music is a frantic, lo-fi explosion of electroclash that prioritizes raw energy and shock value over studio polish. It is the sound of the early 2000s Oakland underground: gritty, unashamedly queer, and relentlessly fun. The beats are skeletal and programmed, often sounding like preset rhythms from a vintage toy, providing a bouncy foundation for their chaotic vocal performances.
What truly sets them apart is their commitment to the 'trash' aesthetic. They blend the DIY ethics of queercore punk with the danceable cynicism of electroclash, resulting in songs that are simultaneously hilarious and confrontational. Their lyrics frequently revolve around junk food, sexual escapades, and personal vendettas, delivered with a mix of deadpan rapping and exuberant shouting. It is performance art disguised as a dance party, where the boundaries between the stage and the audience completely dissolve.
For the uninitiated, 'Are You Wigglin?' is the essential entry point. It captures the band at their most cohesive without losing the jagged, amateurish charm that defines their sound. It is music for people who find beauty in the absurd and who believe that the best parties happen in basements with low ceilings and high energy.
Gravy Train!!!! were an electroclash band from Oakland, California. The band released material on the labels S.P.A.M. Records, Cold Crush, Kill Rock Stars, Cochon Records, and Retard Disco. The band had four members, that went by the pseudonyms Chunx, Funx, Hunx, and Junx. Chunx and Funx formed the band in 2001 as a vehicle for recording humiliating songs about an ex-lover. It was for this purpose that their first single, "Hella Nervous", was recorded. Shortly after, the two-piece recruited two openly gay backup dancers, Hunx and Drunx. Drunx was later replaced by Junx. Gravy Train!!!! toured with Bratmobile and Le Tigre.
