Sun-drenched French pop that marries 60s yéyé melodies with breezy West Coast surf rock. Perfectly bittersweet for coastal drives and hazy summer afternoons.
Granville sounds like a vintage postcard found in a beach house drawer. It is the sonic equivalent of a faded summer photograph, capturing a specific intersection between 1960s French pop and American garage rock. The music is anchored by Mélissa Dubourg’s breathy, effortless vocals which float over jangling guitars and steady, driving rhythms that feel both nostalgic and remarkably fresh.
What truly distinguishes the band is their ability to evoke the seaside atmosphere of their namesake town in Normandy while channeling the sunny energy of California surf culture. They avoid the trap of being a mere tribute act by infusing their melodies with a modern indie-pop sensibility. The production is warm and organic, favoring analog textures that make the songs feel lived-in and intimate rather than digitally sterile.
Start with their debut album, Les Voiles, particularly the standout track Jersey. It serves as the perfect gateway into their world, showcasing their knack for writing infectious, bittersweet hooks that linger long after the music stops. It is essential listening for anyone who loves the intersection of francophone charm and retro-rock energy.
Granville is a French pop band formed in Caen in January 2011 and made up of Mélissa Dubourg (vocals), Sofian El Gharrafi (singer-songwriter, guitar, keyboards), Nathan Bellanger (bass) and Arthur Allizard (drums). Sofian and Nathan, were earlier in the band Chocolate Donuts. The name is a tribute Granville, Manche in Lower Normandy where all members find attachment. They play mostly 1960s-influenced music described by Le Point as a mix of "Anglo-saxon rock-garage music and melodies of French yéyé revisited". Another magazine Les Inrockuptibles called their music "disc pop very precisely American charm that brought a West Coast wind, it is a dozen romantic and naive ballads". They became popular taking part in many festivals and music events. In 2012, Granville performed at Festival Papillons de nuit and Rock en Seine. Their debut single was "Jersey" that was released on 6 June 2012, a tribute to the island of Jersey near Normandie. Signed to the label East West, owned by Warner Music, they released their debut album Les Voiles on 4 February 2013.
