Gone

Gone is the primary instrumental vehicle for Greg Ginn, the visionary guitarist and founder of Black Flag and SST Records. Formed in 1985 as Black Flag was dissolving, Gone represented Ginn's pivot toward improvisational, atonal rock that defied the conventions of the hardcore scene he helped build.

The band's early lineup featured bassist Andrew Weiss and drummer Sim Cain, both of whom would later form the backbone of the Rollins Band, bringing a high level of technical proficiency to Ginn's experimental compositions. The sound identity is defined by Ginn's signature 'warped' guitar tone and his use of the whole-tone scale and chromaticism, creating a sense of constant harmonic instability. Historically, Gone is a crucial link between the American hardcore movement and the emergence of noise rock and math rock in the 1990s. Despite long periods of inactivity and the legendary distribution hurdles of the SST label, the group remains a cult favorite for its uncompromising approach to the power trio format, blending the rhythmic drive of funk with the intellectual rigor of free jazz and the sonic violence of punk.
